of Munshi Institute
Munshi began with a simple belief: language is not just a collection of words, but a way to understand people, cultures, and the places we call home. Founded by Ainur M. Aminuddin, a Malay language educator with over a decade of experience, Munshi was created to help international learners experience Malaysia through its language.
Over the years, Ainur has taught Malay to learners from different countries and backgrounds, witnessing how a few simple words can open doors to friendships, meaningful conversations, and deeper cultural connections. Through Munshi, she brings together her passion for education, language, and Malaysia’s diverse heritage to create a learning experience where students can speak with confidence and connect with the community around them.

Having family from Malaysia, but not being able to speak the language has at times made me feel disconnected from my culture. I had tried finding apps and online resources in the past to help me learn, but found these difficult to commit to. However, learning with Ainur has been a really effective way to commence my Malay learning journey. Our lessons have focused on my goals, and built my confidence for speaking and understanding the language. Our lessons have made learning a new language far less daunting, and have given me the opportunity to connect better with my family and culture. Seeing my skills progress from week to week is really rewarding, and I’m excited to use my Malay skills on my upcoming holiday to Penang!

As a Malaysian raised abroad, Malay was a completely foreign language for me. At the beginning of my Malay-learning journey, the greatest hurdle I faced was the fear of making mistakes. I was afraid I would be judged for my poor Malay by other Malaysians. However, Cikgu Ainur guided me for 2 years with great patience and knowledge. My Malay improved from near-zero to finally being able to understand my surroundings and communicate effortlessly. If you are somebody like me, you should try it out with Cikgu Ainur too!

I decided to learn Malay because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and connect more meaningfully with the community in Malaysia. I also need to speak, understand, write & know Malay language for applying for Permanent Residence in Malaysia. In the beginning, it was quite challenging. I used to feel a bit hesitant to speak because I was afraid of making mistakes or mispronouncing words. Cikgu Ainur is remarkably patient, constantly encouraging, and has a way of making complex topics very easy to grasp. The improvement has been immense! After over 3 years of learning together. I can now structure sentences much more naturally and understand the nuances of the language far better than before. My proudest moments are when I can spontaneously use Malay in daily conversations outside of class, and Malaysians understand me perfectly! Don't hesitate for a second! Malay is a beautiful, culturally rich language. Just take that first step, stay consistent, and make sure you have an amazing mentor like Cikgu Ainur to guide you through it.

When I moved to Malaysia after getting married, I decided to learn Malay because I felt it would be the best way to truly integrate into the local community. Starting out was incredibly interesting, especially since I noticed some fascinating similarities between Malay and my mother tongue, Tamil. What I enjoy most about learning with Cikgu Ainur is her focus on making me feel comfortable using the language in everyday settings, which has immensely boosted my confidence over time. Since joining her lessons, I feel much more assured in handling conversations with locals entirely on my own. A moment that made me incredibly proud and grateful occurred recently when I was admitted to the hospital to deliver my baby. Even during such a stressful time, I was able to successfully communicate and respond to my medical team in Malay, and I am so thankful to Cikgu Ainur for giving me the tools to do that. To anyone thinking about learning Malay, I would absolutely encourage you to take the leap. It will build your confidence and open up wonderful opportunities for genuine communication and connection with the locals!

We are a family of French-Malay and realised the kids need to learn both of the languages as it's important to know their roots. My husband always told the kids that Malay language is important for them. I have always talked and read to my son since baby in malay. Basically, he understands Malay, however his vocabs are limited as we always stay outside of Malaysia. After taking classes with Cikgu Ainur, he has more textbook vocabularies than before which is very good compared to my usage of bahasa pasar and dialect from my place of origin; Kuala Kangsar. He can communicate more with his grandmother in Malay. I realised he has more vocab than before when we had a call with my mum who speaks very little English. Although he has the french accent, nonetheless he can understand my mother and he can explain better to my mother than before. Never forget our beautiful language and roots wherever we are. It's funny when we are in France, some kids always ask my kids where we came from as we will speak in Malay. It's our secret language. I didn't listen to our French speech therapist who blames me for making my kids learn/ talk in Malay and English. For me, language is important to bridge the gap between each other.

I decided to learn Malay when we were relocated to Malaysia. It is important to me to know the basics and be able to demonstrate some level of understanding. My children also learn at school and so it is fun to practice. Malay is an interesting language which is different to many European Languages in structure, however it is not too complicated and so quite quickly it is possible to understand some of the basics. It has some interesting quirks which are fun to try to understand. Ainur is a patient and fun teacher covering elements of Malay heritage and culture with the relevant language. It is good to cover writing, speaking and listening. Ainur is friendly and gets to understand your level quickly - lessons are pitched at a level for continuous learning at a challenging but not unachievable level so that you can see your confidence grow. Since starting learning with Ainur my confidence and vocabulary have grown quickly. The materials from the lessons are great for reference and revision and re-reading them helps embed the learning. I am finding myself using malay more regularly and also challenging my own understanding when out and about. Last weekend we had visitors from the UK and I was able to tell restaurant staff that I was waiting for my friends before ordering, and then I was able to recommend to them a Malaysian breakfast and order for the whole family. Give it a go! You will make fast progress and any Malaysian will really appreciate even the most basic effort to speak their language. It is great to know a little of the language whenever you travel/stay, especially in more rural settings.

I decided to learn Malay because I’m studying medicine in Malaysia and wanted to communicate better with patients and the people around me. ❤️At first, I found Malay quite difficult and didn’t feel confident speaking it. I was always afraid of making mistakes. 😅 What I enjoy most is how patient, encouraging, and fun you make every lesson. You create such a comfortable environment that I’m not afraid to try speaking. 🌸 My Malay has improved so much! I can understand conversations better, speak with more confidence, and even use Malay during my clinical postings. 🩺🇲🇾 One of my happiest moments was being able to communicate with Malay-speaking patients without needing help. It made me feel more confident as a future doctor. 😊✨I’d definitely say go for it! Don’t worry about making mistakes because that’s how you learn. With a supportive teacher like you, learning Malay becomes enjoyable and something to look forward to. 💛
